TWO AREA MEN CHARGED IN DRUG PROBE IN RHODE ISLANDWESTERLY, Rhode Island - Police in Westerly, Rhode Island Hopkinton, Rhode Island and Connecticut arrested two area men and seized an estimated $6,900 worth of marijuana following a two-month investigation, Rhode Island authorities said Saturday.
Westerly, Rhode Island Police arrested a North Stonington man on drug charges and other offenses Friday night after he allegedly rammed an undercover Rhode Island police car and led authorities on a chase in Westerly.
Brian D. Hoitt, 30, of 95 Stillman Road, was charged with possession of marijuana with intent to deliver, driving while in possession of a controlled substance, duty to stop after an accident with an attended vehicle, resisting arrest and obstructing a police officer.
Hoitt's arrest follows an investigation by the Westerly, Rhode Island Police Department's Narcotics Division, the Hopkinton, Rhode Island Police Department and the Connecticut State Police Statewide Narcotics Task Force.
Westerly, Rhode Island detectives spotted Hoitt driving a 2001 Dodge Dakota pickup truck shortly after 6 p.m., and attempted to stop the vehicle on Upper High Street, police said.
Hoitt then allegedly collided the truck with an unmarked police vehicle containing two detectives, and led police on a pursuit down Brookside Drive, Joseph Street, Ann Street and Perkins Avenue.
During the chase, police saw Hoitt throwing contraband outside the driver's side window, police said. Hoitt failed to stop at several intersections during the pursuit, police said.
Westerly, Rhode Island patrol officers were able to end the pursuit and detain Hoitt on Canal Street, police said.
Hoitt continued to resist as officers arrested him, police said.
Authorities searched Hoitt's truck and found "a large quantity" of marijuana in it, according to Westerly, Rhode Island Police Chief Stephen N. Baker. Police also recovered marijuana along the chase route.
Nearly one pound of marijuana with a street value of $1,900 and a small amount of cash was recovered, police said. Hoitt's vehicle was seized as part of the investigation.
The two Westerly, Rhode Island detectives in the vehicle that Hoitt's truck allegedly rammed were not injured, police said.
The Connecticut State Police Narcotics Task Force executed a search at Hoitt's North Stonington residence and seized a large amount of marijuana, drug paraphernalia and a 1993 Chevy pickup, police said.
Charges are pending against Hoitt in Connecticut, according to authorities.
Hoitt was held overnight and scheduled to be arraigned Saturday at the Westerly, Rhode Island police station.
Washington County Superior Court records show that in February of 1999, Hoitt pleaded no contest to Westerly, Rhode Island police charges of delivery of a controlled substance and conspiracy to violate the controlled substances act, both felonies. He was sentenced to 90 months at the Adult Correctional Institutions, with six months to serve and seven years suspended sentence/probation.
Westerly, Rhode Island and Hopkinton, Rhode Island authorities also charged a Bradford man with possession of marijuana on Nov. 18 after police seized over two pounds of the drug, with a street value of about $5,000.
Christopher Beaudreau, 22, of 16 Bowling Lane, Bradford, faces two charges of possession of marijuana with intent to deliver, Westerly, Rhode Island police said.
Both arrests followed a two-month investigation by Hopkinton, Rhode Island and Westerly, Rhode Island police.
Hopkinton, Rhode Island police arrested Beaudreau Nov. 18 at about 6:30 p.m. following a motor vehicle stop on Chase Hill Road, police said.
Police reportedly found Beaudreau in possession of a quarter-pound of marijuana. A Westerly, Rhode Island police search of Beaudreau's home yielded over two pounds of the drug, authorities said.
Beaudreau was arraigned in Fourth Division District Court and faces a Dec. 10 screening with the state Attorney General's office.
