Man, 18, dies; driver charged in Rhode Island
WOONSOCKET, Rhode Island -- An 18-year-old city man is dead and his friend is facing criminal charges after a car crash on Hamlet Avenue early Sunday morning in Rhode Island. Arron Lemieux, reportedly the father of a two-year-old child, died at Rhode Island Hospital in Providence after being thrown from the front seat of a car that collided with an unidentified stationary object, according to Woonsocket, Rhode Island police reports.
Michael J. Connors Jr., 24, who has a past conviction for drunk driving in Massachusetts, faces charges of driving to endanger with death resulting, and leaving the scene of an accident with death resulting, according to police reports.
The two men reportedly were friends and lived in the same apartment building on Roland Street.
Shortly after midnight Sunday, Woonsocket police received a report of a motor vehicle accident on Hamlet Avenue. On arriving at the scene, officers found Lemieux unconscious on the sidewalk. Rescue crews transported him to Rhode Island Hospital, where he was pronounced dead five hours later.
A witness to the accident told police she saw the driver step out of the car and run away. Hours later Connors turned himself in at the Woonsocket Police Station.
Connors, shoeless and with scratches on his face and hands, tried to remain stoic during a bail hearing at the police station Sunday night. But when asked his name, he responded in a raspy, cracking voice.
Justice of the Peace Richard Finnegan set bail at $20,000 cash. However, Woonsocket, Rhode Island police said he would not be released even if he posted that amount, because he is also wanted on a warrant charging him with failure to appear in court. Rhode Island police said that charge was the result of a domestic disturbance.
According to police, Connors was arrested in Massachusetts in 1999 for driving under the influence of alcohol with serious injury resulting. He was later convicted on the reduced charge of driving under the influence, and sentenced to probation.
Following Sunday’s bail hearing, police transported Connors to the Adult Correctional Institutions in Cranston. He will be arraigned Monday morning in Providence District Court.
"Coming so near the holidays, this is a very tough case for everyone involved," Sgt. Todd Brien said after the bail hearing. "Our hearts go out to the families of both the victim and the suspect." Drug Rehab by County
