Young father shot at bus stop, dies from wounds in Rhode IslandPROVIDENCE, Rhode Island -- A young father shot near a bus stop in Manton Heights earlier this week has died. A juvenile boy is being held in connection with the shooting.
Elvin Aponte, 21, never recovered after he was gunned down in the street outside 470 Manton Ave., in Olneyville, Rhode Island on Tuesday morning. He died at Rhode Island Hospital on Thursday.
But his family said that Aponte, nicknamed "Porkchops" because of his size, was conscious long enough after the shooting to name his alleged killer. Within hours, the police obtained an arrest warrant for a 17-year-old boy, who turned himself in that night and was charged in the shooting.
Lt. Keith Tucker, who heads the Youth Services Bureau, said he couldn't confirm whether Aponte named the boy or comment on a motive for the shooting. The boy, whose name is being withheld by the Rhode Island police because he's a juvenile, is being held at the state Training School.
But Aponte's family said the boy and Aponte had once been friends. There was a falling-out years ago, said Aponte's mother, Aida, though no one knew what they'd fought about.
Then Aponte was shot in the back while on Public Street in South Providence, Rhode Island a few years ago. His family said they believe the 17-year-old was involved in that shooting, too. Aponte recovered, although the bullet couldn't be removed from near his spine, his mother said.
His family said he brushed off that shooting, although court records show he dodged trouble with the law during the last years of his short life. Aponte had been in and out of jail on various charges, including drug possession, and was just released from the ACI last month for obstructing a police officer, according to court records.
His freedom didn't last a month. On Tuesday morning, his girlfriend, Brittney Aponte, said he left their Manton Heights apartment to walk to the store to get items for their four-month-old son. He was shot in the chest, and the bullet tore down through his abdomen, said his brother, Jose, 25. A doctor at Rhode Island Hospital promised to do everything he could, but he was honest with the family, Jose said. The bullet had done its damage.
Aponte is the first homicide victim in the capital city this year. There were 20 murders in Providence last year.
"These kids, this violence has to stop," Jose Aponte said.
Yesterday, the family remembered Elvin Aponte for his sense of humor, his poetry, and the way he liked to walk all over the city. His mother recalled him as a chubby baby whom she named for Alvin of Alvin and the Chipmunks, a television show she loved.
"I called him an old soul. He anaylzed everything," said Tracy Thomas, Jose Aponte's girlfriend and a family friend. "He always had an answer for everything. He always looked at things differently."
Aponte was excited about the birth of his son, who shares his name, and often spent time with the baby, his family said.
"He may not have made a lot of good decisions in his life, but he was a good person," Thomas said. Drug Rehab by County
